Entry requirements to study at the University of Portsmouth, UK for Indian Students

The University of Portsmouth’s international student admissions committee evaluates all the completed applications that the University of Portsmouth receives. Undergraduate course admission requirements to study at the University of Portsmouth, UK

  • State / National Board: If you have an average of 75% or above in the 12 Standard (state board) examinations or 70% in the Central Board, University of Portsmouth will consider you for admission into an undergraduate course like the Bachelor’s degree.
  • A Level: Preferred 3 A’s in the relevant subject. However, students with 2 A’s and a B can also be considered.*
  • IB Diploma: Most courses at the University of Portsmouth will require between 24 and 31 points in the International Baccalaureate (IB), depending on the degree you apply for.
  • Transfer Entry: If you have progressed from 10th Standard to a recognised three years diploma in India, you may be considered for entry into the second year of a relevant program, provided you achieve 60% or above, in the diploma course.
  • Foundation Course at the University of Portmouth: You can also apply if you have successfully completed a recognised foundation programme if you do not meet the entry requirements for your selected undergraduate course. *Note: Some courses will require you to have studied specific subjects at A level.

English Language Requirement for Bachelor’s Courses

IELTS score of 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in each component is typically required. Students can also opt for TOEFL iBT or PTE Academic or an equivalent test that is accepted internationally.

Postgraduate courses admission requirement to study at the University of Portsmouth UK

  • Taught Masters:  For entry to our Master’s programmes, you will generally need to have a Bachelor’s degree with at least 2nd Class Honors to be considered. For Indian students, its typically 60% or higher in their Bachelors degree. You may be admitted to the Master’s programmes with a lower level degree, with the relevant work experience.
  • Pre-Masters: In case you do not meet with the direct entry requirements to enter in to one of the Masters at the University of Portsmouth, you may choose to take a pre-master’s programme at International College Portsmouth (ICP) for a number of courses.   • PhD: University of Portsmouth will consider you for a PhD if you have a recognised Master’s degree with grades that can transfer and a cogent research proposal.

English Language Requirement for Masters Courses

An IELTS score of 6.5, with no less than 6.0 in each component is typically required. Students can also opt for TOEFL iBT or for the PTE Academic or any equivalent score that is globally recognised.

Medium of Instruction as English – Letter of Confirmation

Students who have done their undergraduate studies in India in the English medium, the college of study must provide a confirmation letter with regards to the same.   • The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) gives scholarships to students from the Commonwealth. These scholarships aim to attract outstanding talent to British universities and to combine sustainable development with the UK national interest.
  • The CSC awards scholarships for all levels and modes of study including undergraduate courses, Master’s programmes, PhDs and courses studied via distance learning.

Application Deadlines to study at the University of Portsmouth UK

Deadline for Undergraduate Courses after 12th grade

The normal closing date to receive applications for full-time undergraduate courses is 15th January for the September intake. If possible, try to ensure that your application reaches the university by this date. The Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (also known as UCAS) sends all applications that it receives after 15 January (until 30 June). However, the university does allocate seats on a first come first serve basis and they do not guarantee that they will give the same level of consideration or offers for the applications that are done by 15 January.

Deadline for Postgraduate Courses

Generally, the University of Portsmouth does not have an application deadline for postgraduate courses. However, we recommend all students to apply for the postgraduate courses, at least by 15th May, for the September intake.
