Switzerland Education System

Switzerland is internationally recognised as a center of excellence for education, its attraction for studying and research is well-established. All Swiss universities offer their courses in accordance with the Bologna system: undergraduate studies culminate in a Bachelor’s degree, which can be further advanced with a Master’s degree, in compliance with international agreements. A total of 135,000 students attend Switzerland’s world-class Bachelor’s, Master’s and Ph.D. programs, which are based on cutting-edge research and cover a variety of areas.

Domestic policy places a high value on higher education. Swiss universities are generously funded public institutions. In Switzerland the 26 cantons are responsible for compulsory education. Most children receive their compulsory education at their local state-run school. Afterwards, 90% of young people continue their education for a period of two, three or four years. Once they have obtained their post-compulsory qualifications, they either enter professional working life, embark on a higher vocational education course or enrol at university. Vocational training is an integral part of the Swiss education system. It begins at the upper-secondary level, with pupils having the option of continuing through to tertiary level. It is characterised by a high degree of permeability: pupils may pursue more advanced education and training opportunities and later change the course of their working lives with relative ease.

The Swiss education system comprises the following educational levels:

  • primary level (including Kindergarten or first learning cycle)
  • lower-secondary education
  • upper-secondary education: vocational education and training (VET) and general education schools (Baccalaureate schools and upper-secondary specialised schools)
  • tertiary level education: tertiary level B professional education and training (PET) outside tertiary level A institutions (Federal PET Diploma Examinations, Advanced Federal PET Diploma Examinations and PET colleges) and tertiary level A institutions (universities, universities of applied sciences and universities of teacher education)
  • continuing education and training (CET)
