Quick notes about studying Bachelors in Germany:

  • Free Education in Germany: Well, literally. The German State Government funds majority of German Universities. Hence most German Universities do not charge a tuition fee. You may only spend Euro 200 to Euro 500 per semester towards “semester contribution”. Some Universities do charge a tuition fee but it is very low

There may be an additional charge of around Euro 100 for a “Semesterticket”, which covers public transport expenses for six months.

  • Duration: Bachelor degrees in Germany are of 3 to 4 year duration
  • Courses Taught in German: Most undergraduate programs in Germany are taught in German language. Students need to appear for an Exam called TestDaf (Test of Dutch as Foreign Language) or German Language University Entrance Examination (DSH) to Qualify for undergraduate courses in Germany
  • Courses Taught in English: Several Universities in Germany offer undergraduate courses which are taught in English and these could be paid programs
  • Entry Requirement (your qualification): 13 years of Education in India is mandatory (ie 12 + 1 year from University) to apply for a Bachelors program in Germany. If not, then students can go via 1 year Foundation Course Or class 10 education + 3 year Diploma is acceptable
  • English Language Requirement: All students must take an English Language test ie. either IELTS test (with a recommended score of at least 6.0 overall) or TOEFL iBT test (with a recommended score of at least 80 points)
  • Route to Study: You could take one of the two acceptable tests by German Institutions.

The Test of German as a Foreign Language (TestDAF), which is held six times a year in test centres throughout the world. You can save yourself time and money by taking the test  in your country.

The German Language University Entrance Examination (DSH), which is administered only at German universities and will test your proficiency and suitability for university study.

Generally Indian students go to Germany for an 8 month German Language Program to start with. The language Institute trains students on German Language. It also prepares them for the TestDaf exam and thereafter places them in Universities

  • Factors for Admission: Universities give importance to academics, score in Testdaf or DSH for programs taught in German and IELTS or TOEFL test for programs taught in English. Some German Universities also consider the rank in JEE (IIT Entrance Test) for Indian students (depending on the program you are applying to)
  • Work during Study: All international students are eligible for part time jobs during the program and are encouraged to undertake a one year internship during their bachelor degree study in Germany
  • The Diploma Confusion: In Germany, Bachelors level programs are sometimes referred to as Diplomas. Do not confuse this with the Diplomas in other countries which are a level lower than Bachelor degrees. With the Bologna Process, most Universities are referring the undergraduate programs as neither Bachelors nor Diplomas in Germany
