Work Permit in Germany for International Students – Rules

Education in Germany can be rewarding too!

Work During your Study in Germany

You are allowed to do part time work in Germany during course. Working hours for students in Germany are for a total of 120 full or 240 half days per year. 8 hours normally constitute a full day in Germany, so 4 hours are one half day, though 10 and 5 are possible as well according to the law – if that is the normal working day in that company.

Students needs to find part time jobs themselves. This is the case in all countries. Your University may sometimes update you through their regular mailers. However, keep an eye on the vacancies. Also remember – do not overdo it. Your study abroad plans mean that you are going to Germany for some top education. There will be full time jobs available later after the program (check the policy below). We recommend all our students to do at least the A1 German language course in India before they go to Germany.

Internship during your course of study in Germany

This is an opportunity given to students to break the studies for going to professional jobs to gain practical knowledge in the Industry. The length of Internship varies ranges from just summer vacation to one year. The University placement cells actively help the students to look for internships. Besides practical knowledge students are exposed to German language and culture, which are very crucial for living in Germany in the future. This opportunity also boosts your full time job opportunities.

Work After Study in Germany

After graduating, students can stay in Germany for 18 months to search for jobs ie. to seek skilled posts. During these 18 months, you may take up any kind of employment to support yourself and fund your job search.

So, a large number of international students stay back after completing their graduation and pursue work after study in Germany. Some even hope to stay in Germany permanently after completing their studies.

One important aspect of education in Germany is upon completion of any program at German universities, the student’s residence permit also expires automatically even if it was originally issued for a longer period of time. This means that a candidate has to apply anew at the Foreigners’ Registration Office requesting an extension of his or her residence permit so that the candidate can avail opportunities for work after study in Germany.

We believe that there are umpteen job opportunities in Germany after masters.

Residence permit for taking up employment in Germany

German Residence Permit or EU Blue Card

As soon as you have a job offer which corresponds to your qualifications, you can choose whether you want to apply for a German residence permit or an EU Blue Card for the next part of your stay. Various conditions are attached to both these residence permits. Depending on what you are planning to do in the future, either the German residence permit or the EU Blue Card can be advantageous for you.

With a German residence permit, candidates have the freedom to explore employment opportunities and career possibilities in the country.

However, if you subsequently intend to live and work in another EU state, the EU Blue Card may be more advantageous for you than the German residence permit. As the choice of residence permit largely depends on your personal situation, get the advice of your local foreign nationals’ registration office when you apply.

Even if you just get a job offer for a part-time employment, a residence permit can be granted to you. It is important that the expected salary secures all means of subsistence. The decision depends entirely on the local immigration authority.

Acquisition of a German residence permit for work after study in Germany is essentially a two-step process where the first step involves a temporary German residence for the duration of job hunting done by the candidate after education in Germany. The second step involves a German residence permit or an EU Blue Card issued after the candidate secures employment in Germany.
